Look for the Blessing

Over the years, I have come to realize that troubles don’t really shape our happiness or sorrow. It is our attitude that makes the difference. The way in which we choose to perceive happenings and events in our lives ultimately determines whether or not we will be happy or not. Some people can be joyful even in the midst of greatest trials, while others can be miserable even after their biggest victories.

A few years ago, I volunteered a day at the Special Olympics, and I witnessed what having a positive attitude is all about. In case you are unfamiliar with the Special Olympics, it is an athletic sporting event for person with mental disabilities, such as downs syndrome. Each athlete has some mental handicap and sometimes physical handicaps as well. So, this day, it was pouring rain that day and at first all of us volunteers were beginning to grumble about the horrid weather. But then we noticed that none of the athletes complained. They were all just so excited to be there and to participate in the grand event. They beamed, smiling cheek to cheek as they showed off their medals or told the stories of what had happened out on the field. They didn’t really seem to care whether they won or lost. They were there for the game, and knew that they had reason to be proud of the very fact that they were there and competing in the finals. It was truly amazing to be amongst a group of such happy and cheerful individuals.

Next time you find yourself unhappy about something, try to see the blessing in the situation and thank GOD for it. I promise you will have a happier day!

Sometimes you have to change the way you look at things to find peace. Instead of complaining about the situation you are in, try looking for the positive aspect of the situation and thanking GOD for that. For example, if you lost your job, do not worry about how you will pay the bills, but instead thank GOD for the opportunity and extra time to spend with your family and those you love. Thank GOD for the opportunity to spend more time with HIM (haven’t you ever said, I’d pray more if I had more time?). Thank GOD that HE has something better in store for you. Or, if your parents, spouse or siblings yelled at you this morning, thank God that they care enough to take the time and effort to tell you when they think you are wrong. Only those who care about us are willing to fight with us.

GOD gives us many blessings, but we will all have to face challenges. We will find peace when we are able to see the blessings in those challenges.
