My sister once said to me, “Sleep is overrated! It is a waste of time!” I beg to differ. I love to sleep. I believe God made day and night because during the day he wanted us to work, but at night, he wanted us to rest…to sleep. I know we all have a thousand things we need to do, a not enough time, but if you make the time to rest, you will find that you will be able to get everything else done much more efficiently. Sleep is necessary to re-charge ourselves to face the challenges of the next day.
I myself have had bouts with insomnia (sleeplessness) and know that it is not fun. Sleepless nights often result in cranky days
This past week God has repeatedly shown me that He wants to give us rest…He wants to give us sleep.
First, a lady brought her small son (3-5 yrs old) to church last Sunday. Due to anxiety (he has been throuh a lot of life changes with his father walking out on the family and them shifting to a new home), the child did not sleep well at night. He would only sleep for a few hours at a time and would get up early in the morning. The mother was very concerned. We prayed. Praise God, the next night, the child slept for 13 hours straight! And he has been sleeping through the night ever since.
Later, during the week, a young girl with depression and several other health issues came over. She said that she was unable to fall asleep at night. And even when she did fall asleep (usually well into the early hours of the morning), her sleep would be restless and she would wake up early. We prayed together. The Lord did a miracle! That very night, she fell asleep before 10 PM and didn’t wake up until the next morning. She has been sleeping peacefully ever since. Her mom commented, “It seems like you are catching up on all of your overdue sleep!”
Finally, I got a call just two days ago from a friend of a friend in the US. We do not talk much…usually only when I am in the US. But, he called me in India this past week. And guess why he called? He said that he had been suffering from severe insomnia and wanted prayer! We prayed.
As I was praying for the various people with sleep deprivation, and seeing God work miracles, He reminded me of a common verse: Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28.
When we can’t sleep, or if we just find ourselves restless or lacking peace, we often count sheep at night, try various home remedies or turn to medication, but the best place to find peace is Jesus. So, if you need rest today, go to Him…He will give you rest.
